Kevin Hoover
I started mushroom hunting in August 2019 upon finding chanterelles in the woods behind the house. That Fall, being a beginner, I focused on Hydnum umbilicatum (hedgehogs) under hemlocks. 2020 Fall was so dry, we barely found anything. So now it’s 2021 Fall. I’m back in the edge of the woods helping my wife clear a new path to drive her horses on. I’m walking down where I think the path will go, and a couple of small red mushrooms grab my attention. Will let them grow bigger, I think they might be waxy caps. As I bent down to look at them, my wife yelled for me. I started turning around and almost brushed this Hen of the Woods! The first one I ever found! Now I need to check the rest of the woods.

Foulhook
Well done Kevin. Congrats. They are in abundance right now. Finding a couple or more everyday I go out for a few hours. Now that you’ve found 1 it will be much easier finding more.
Jesse h
Hello, i just was handed a bunch of fresh harvested hens. Cutting them open i see that there’s a white film on the inside of some. Is this normal? Thanks for anyone’s help.
vitog
Since the spores are white, it might be fallen spores. Check if the white film wipes off easily.
