MattVa
This is on a fallen limb out of a large oak. Complete luck, Another first for me unless I'm wrong some how. Matt
dualsetters
Looks like Hericium erinaceus , bearded tooth or pom pom mushroom. They have been my favorites and are supposed to be good brain food.
MattVa
Thanks Dual setters! This one was still quite small when would be a good time to re-check for picking size? Been two days since that pic.
dualsetters
No problem Matt Most I have found were miles from home so I really can't say. I've found them not so big that we're starting to brown , but don't know how long they were there.
John Smalldridge
I've watched Hericium mushrooms on a log for periods up to a month and have seen very little growth after the first couple of days from their appearing. Because of this, I usually pick them when I find them. Their quality for the table is best when they are young.
MattVa
Thanks John, today is has about doubled in size I'm going to let it go until Thursday or Friday before the Hurricane possibly hit. Matt
Dave W
Good deal of glare on the fruit body makes it difficult to see detains. Quite possibly a Hericium, but species ID for this small specimen is more challenging. All Hericiums are good edibles.
MattVa
Sorry about the pic....light was giving me a fit but I grabbed a better one today.
Dave W
Nice photo! Looks like a young Hericium erinaceus (Lion's Mane). But if the spines begin to separate into more individualized clumps as it matures, then H. americanum would be more likely.
Amara
I'm going to agree with Dave. Lions Mane is one of a hand full I have full confidence in and that certainly looks like a tasty Lions Mane to me. I've only found them in the spring so I'm a little jealous. I didn't find any Chickens yet either:( I'm always concerned to leave them as they seem to dry out or dissapear very quickly.
MattVa
When I found it a few days ago it was about the size of a silver dollar and not as toothy, now it's about close to a softball and very toothy compared. I'm probably going to pick it tomorrow there is one on the other side about the size of a golf ball that I can keep watching. As for Chickens....I found a nice one the first time I went hunting and only ID it ....found a dried up one later that was bitter and Woody but I eat enough to see if I was ok with it......haven't seen anymore sense but I'm lookn .:)

John Smalldridge
Matt, watch the spines, once they start to go yellow the flavor will become more bitter/off in my experience.
