Kevin Hoover
I figured I had a good property for blewits to grow, spruce trees, plenty of hardwood with downed trees and limbs that close to pockets of leaves. So I thought I’d help that out, and spread several bags of blewit spawn in likely spots last year, and again this year. This year I put one in my compost pile (mostly horse manure, hay and straw), hoping it would colonize and I would then be spreading blewit mycelium anytime I spread the compost. So, yesterday I found my first (we just had our first frost last night). I found it growing in the middle of the back yard, 200 feet from the nearest spawn I spread! Spore printed it last night. CamilleR
Interesting it was so far away. Hopefully you'll have plenty more. I've looked around lots and lots of dead trees with wood debris and I have them in one consistent location.
Kevin Hoover
I thought I might have them coming up under a blue spruce I have, as I saw about 15 mushrooms coming up under it. I checked this morning, as they are a little bigger. Not blewits, but shaggy parasols, third flush this year under that tree! I don’t know how the frost will affect them, but I watered them this morning to try to encourage them.
