In europe we say morels show up 8-10 days after sarcosphaera crassa. Cheers. -
Annoying fungal absence in the Southeast

Agree, have not seen a thing! -
Agree. In addition, if you dry the tree ear, then the lower surface becomes rougher, a bit like sandpaper while the upper surface is smoother... Color then become clearly different (black on top, greyish underneatrh) Cheers

Nice, good start!

In Europe, I would find them both in the Spring and the Fall. Interstingly enough, the locations were different.

Thanks I checked the younger specimens and did not find any veil. This is a picture of the same ones from yesterday. Nice spore print....

A pleasant tasting bolete, brownish-red cap, white pores
Cedric replied to ChefsWild's topic in Identifying Mushrooms
I am quite familiar with the European Boletus Pinophilus, and this definitely looks quite similar, though slightly different. Stem is typically much thicker and bulbous, but the colour of the cap and stem is right on. So, I can understand it would be named this way. -
I cut the ones that have started to turn pink until only white is left. Never had any problems. It is delicious sauteed with butter but need to be consumed within hours of picking.

I was told bolettelus Russelli. Opinions?

Very similar to what I am used to find in Spain, though someone smaller. Too elastic and sturdy to be Mycena Pura. Maybe a similar NA species I am not familiar with. Opinions?
-
Fair enough. In Spanish or French it actually is Judas' ear. Wonder what the Latin is? Judas is Judas or Jew,?
-
A bolete. No reticulum. Non bitter. No distinct smell. Non bluing. Growing under oak in the middle of a long leaf pine forest. Boletus Subagrilpes?
-
Nope... Auricularia auricula-judae is a very different mushroom. brown to black, translucent when fresh. Could be Piptoporus Betulinus, or a similar one. I am not an expert in those, but this is definitely not Jew's ear, which I have found and eaten numerous times.

Check Lactarius Rufus...

Hi ChelsWild, that would be great. I seem to be in Raleigh every other week... Next trip planned is week after next. Why don't we exchange phone numbers and I'll let you know when I come over and we see if we can do an outing together. Mine is 910 599 0610 Cheers

Thanks John! Too much work but managing some things... I have put a few in the identifiaction section..

Again, thanks! This is at least the third lookalike to Jacksonii I have seen (one was 1 inch high, fully grown, a beautilful miniature). Looks like I will need to spend time with them to learn to distinguish them.
-
Thanks, I'll check it out. There were several clumps on a number of trees and it is not far, so I will have opportunities to see it in different stages.

Thanks! I guess you don't get it that far north! Cheers.
