Corvus
Found on August 14 in SE Wisconsin in a mulch bed. Maybe 3-4 others nearby. Looking on Mushroomexpert this looks fairly straightforward as none of the other Calvatiae have spots like these. Would love some confirmation. Thanks! Calvert
The gleba of C. cyathifrormis would be purplish at this stage of maturity. Compare it instead to Calvatia craniiformis, which has a yellowish/olive, to brownish gleba when mature. Also, C. cyathiformis doesn't seem to be ever this small, while the range of sizes for C. craniiformis includes smaller fruiting bodies like the one you found. Although it's on the extreme small end of it's range. I wonder if there are any other small species that this could be?
Dave W
I'm having trouble judging the color of the gleba. Maybe it's just the camera, or the lighting. But, the color seems kinda dingy gray rather than either purplish or olive/yellowish. I think either of the two species mentioned may have a cap surface that breaks apart into scales. I'm not sure about the range in size differing much for the two species, although as mentioned this example is small for either craniiformis or cyathiformis. Otherwise, this looks like one or the other of these species. Corvus, how would you describe the color of the gleba?
