I'm no expert, but the dark stem bases are in the descriptions I read and the common name "velvet shank" come from these dark velvety stem bases. I've never found them in the wild, so take my book learnin' for what it is

They look like Flammulina velutipes to me, and nothing else comes immediately to my mind (with sticky caramel-colored caps, dark vlevety stipe bases, clustered growth on wood, and white spore print). Yes, seems early for this species in Tennessee. I believe there have been one or two previous F. velutipes posts made here on WMH during summer months.
