x000111
I was walking past one stump in the yard to check out some mushrooms (the kind you can draw on the bottom of) since they are huge now, and noticed some little pale looking mushrooms. They didn't have much of a smell. They were growing under an old stump that may have once been an Ash tree, right in the middle of our lawn. I was in a rush when I noticed them and will try doing a spore print in the next couple of days. What do you think they are? I cannot find anything online yet but will keep searching. ladyflyfsh
Probably Coprinopsis atramentaria or "inky cap". They will turn into a heap of black mush.
Dave W
Looks like one of the mushrooms formerly placed in the genus Coprinus. In newer identification sources, these types are listed under, Coprinellus, Coprinopsis, or Coprinus. Ladyfish's proposal of Coprinopsis atramantaria is one possibility. Another is Coprinellus micaceus. There are other possibilities. http://mushroomexpert.com/coprinoid.html
ladyflyfsh
Actually, Dave, I think you are more likely correct. I had that one in the back of my mind but couldn't come up with the name.
Feral Boy
C. micaceus is brownish, like these. C. atramentarius is fairly large & thick-capped, and more nearly white.
