foxfire900
Found in upstate New York under hemlocks, with beech, linden, ash, birch, and other random hardwoods nearby. Older mushrooms had an incredible aroma - a mix of anise and wintergreen - and the younger ones were vaguely fragrant. Would love to figure out the species. Calvert
It looks a lot like Ampulloclitocybe clavipes (=Clitocybe clavipes), except for the wrinkles we see at the edge of the cap in photos 1 and 3. They have a pleasant aromatic smell, but not like anise. Some of the Clitocyboid fungi that DO smell like anise are Clitocybe odora, Clitocybe deceptiva and Clitocybe fragrans. However, the former has light blue-green shades in its colour, and the latter 2 are much more slight and thin.
