Hatch clayborne
Any idea? Rolling hills 850’ asl, scattered oak trees, grows in moist conditions in grass, singular or small groups of 2-5.
Dave W
Spore print color would help here. General appearance --short/stubby/thick-stalked-- suggests genus Cortinarius. But grayish tint seen on gills suggests Leratiomyces (or possibly Stropharia).
michele
Possibly a Pholiota highlandensis. Bye
Dave W
Matches pretty well by appearance with Pholiota highlandensis. But, P. highlandensis is a species that occurs on burnt ground. I think this mushroom may represent a species from the group Cortinarius variicolor. Or maybe Stropharia corinilla http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Stropharia_coronilla.html But, the lack of a well-formed annulus (ring) on the stalk points away form S. coronilla.
