ChristiaandeWit
There's no mushrooms growing around the western NC mountains these days. But I found these miraculously sprung up. What are they?
Tasso
Growing on wood?
The Mushroom Whisperer
If on wood, quite possibly Flammulina velutipes.
ChristiaandeWit
That could very well have been coming out of a tree root but if so it was Underground
Dave W
Flammulina velutipes usually grows in clusters directly on exposed wood. But, I have seen this species (or perhaps another species of Flammulina) growing on buried wood. The mushrooms certainly look like F. velutipes, and the time of year is right for this specie (late fall, winter, through mid spring). An important thing to consider... F. velutipes has white spore print. Not just merely pale, starkly white print.
