Rondayvous
Found under hardwood leaves in mixed woods. Has yellowish tint on base. Sitting on white paper waiting for spore print. Grew in clusters, about 6 inches across.
Dave W
Gills look kinda widely-spaced for the large white Clitocybe species (of eastern NA)... or for Leucopaxillus. Do the gills ahev a waxt feel? I think this may be a species of Hygrophorus, maybe H. sordidus. The forest debris sticking to the cap surface is a typical trait of this species. Rondayvous
Despite every other mushroom in the area being slimy, even those that weren't normally slimy, it had been raining all morning. These were not slimy at all. The non slimy version H sordidus isn't known for getting this big, and there were several this size. Been a few hours and still no spore print. I've left it for the morning. I think I'm going to go back to my original plan for white mushrooms with white gills and just ignore them. Dave W
White mushrooms with white gills are often a challenge to ID. If you get a spore print with color other than white, this would be interesting and maybe an ID could be proposed with some confidence. Dave W
I'm sticking with "Hygrophorus" on this one. Gills look to be thick/waxy.
Rondayvous
From what I've read, Hygrophorus is not the most savory mushroom out there. Not a big fan of slimy mushrooms. Too bad, this was one big, meaty looking mushroom.
