Dimi
This pretty double was inside a hollow area in a dead tree trunk.
Dave W
Are you certain this is an Amanita and not some type of puffball? I agree that what is seen looks like the cap surface of a species from section Lepidella of genus Amanita. But, seeing more detail would be helpful. Are there stalks? If so, then what dos the underside of a cap look like? The base of a stalk?
brendan
I agree they look like they could be scleroderma (pigskin puffballs) here’s some I found in a very similar spot (Uprooted tree) this morning, one bisected.
Dave W
So, what about the suspected Amanitas? Do those fruit bodies have stalks/gills?
Dimi
Hi Dave, I’ll go back on a trail tomorrow and report back (assuming they are still there).
Dimi
Turns out to be scleroderma. Dave and Brendan were spot on.
