dualsetters
I found this last week hunting. It stuck out due to its cactus like stem. I thought maybe reishi, then remembered the shiny surface then give up. Sorry if the pics weren't the greatest, but I was keeping track of my dog
jdcooper
Looks like reishi to me.
Dave W
Looks like the tree is a hardwood, in which case Ganoderma lucidum sounds good.
dualsetters
Oh well Should stick to my gut I guess. It just didn't look the same as others I've seen.
Redcap66
At least you know now were to find them.
dualsetters
They were a fluke , reishi is hard to find around here. I found three nice hemlock reishis last year and they didn't return this year. I found a couple small ones this year, but not enough to make much tea. It's hard on the stomach anyhow. I keep my eyes open for chaga. Might have to make a trip to some birch forest I know this winter.
Dave W
I find most of my Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) on Yellow Birch. In some parts of New England I believe they get it on Paper Birch.
Sunny_0ne
Oh well Should stick to my gut I guess. It just didn't look the same as others I've seen. One time I wrote a mushroom expert asking why my sample didn't look like the one in his book. He replied, "They don't know they are supposed to look exactly like the ones in the book." Dave W
Ha! Does seem like some of the mushrooms just don't want to maintain the status quo; always asserting their individuality!
