Aspen
Hi mushroom hunting friends! I spent 45 mins trying to figure out an I’d on these little guys, but was totally unsuccessful! Hoping to get some help from your brains! Found on decomposing horse poop and hay, I’m up in the mountains of Idaho so spring is just popping up here. So the mushies must be some early spring fruiting type. Theres a very delicate veil and it bruises slightly with a rusty color.
Dave W
Maybe a species of Coprinopsis. If so, the mushrooms will eventually deliquesce, meaning the cap/gills will turn black from the lower margin upward and eventually dissolve into a black gooey liquid. These look somewhat like C. variegata, but this species is not reported to grow on dung http://www.mushroomexpert.com/coprinopsis_variegata.html . Interesting. Aspen
Well I’m relieved to hear it’s not a straight forward ID. I thought of coprinopsis species right away as well, and then was perplexed when I couldn’t get an ID. This mushroom has some distinct characteristics that I had assumed would make for an easy ID. I’ll keep an eye on the patch to see if they do deliquesce. thanks for the suggestions!
