What might this be?---DISCIOTIS

JOHNY

Recommended Posts

I had a huge number of similar looking cup fungi last May.

All growing in depressions of ground that I had back filled with Aspen wood chips and covered with a thin layer of hay.

I thought they were Disciotis. Now I am not so sure.

They also look like the Peziza from the previous threat topic. Is growth on wood chip sufficiently diagnostic to differentiate the two species?

I'd say growth on wood chips lends good support to Peziza, in particular P. varia (formerly P. repanda). Also, the clustered growth habit is typical for P. varia. And, the centers of these cups appear to be a bit wrinkled, but not as notably as I'd expect with D. venosa. I think these are Peziza.
