Do you know this mushroom?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

A whole bunch of these just popped up in a large pot plant after many days of heavy rain and humid weather. I live in Sydney city.

The largest one is about 80mm across and 80mm tall.

They smell like a store bought button mushroom, very mild, perhaps even slightly sweet.

I left one on white and black paper Indoors for about 5hours.

Thanks in advance!

It seems a bit too small, but it looks like the green-spored Chlorophyllum molybdites, a poisonous species.  It might be smaller than usual because it's growing in a pot, not its usual habitat.

Thanks for the response! I should mention that the pot in question is very large (750mmx600mm), and contains a mature Japanese weeping maple and dense ajugas as ground covers.

After much research, I considered your above suggestion, however the smell of the mushroom is sweet and woody. And the white spore prints?

Thanks  again!!

These are a species of Leucocoprinus, possibly L. cepaestipes http://www.mushroomexpert.com/leucocoprinus_cepaestipes.html. Although the ring on the stalk is shaped a bit differently than what I'd expect from this species. .

Interesting how the spore deposit seen on the white paper shows some brownish tint? Could this be the result of shadows caused by the thickness of the deposit blocking light? Or a chemical reaction with something in the paper? My guess is that some liquid leached out of the mushroom and stained the paper. The spore print from these mushrooms is almost certainly white.

That's interesting.  The spore print on white looks green on my computer screen.  Concept9, what actual color did it seem to you?
