shroomersue
I am attempting to familiarize myself in tha vast area of the milkies. This I think is Lactarius Xanthogalactus, but to my surprise there is quite a few that have the yellow latex. Found in mixed mainly oak and pine forest in southwestern Ontario. Could there be others that might fit ? Not edible that I know!
Dave W
I believe that L. xanthogalactus is a species of western NA. Here's another possibility, L. chrysorrheus. I find this often here in PA. http://mushroomexpert.com/lactarius_chrysorrheus.html Another similar milky with latex that goes quickly from white to yellow is L. vineorufescens. I find it under pine. The colors are a bit darker than L. chrysorrheus, and usually so is the habitat. http://mushroomexpert.com/lactarius_vinaceorufescens.html You are correct, sue. There are even a few other milkies which feature latex that quickly goes to yellow. The three mentioned in this post are all pretty similar. To my knowledge, the yelloe latex milkies are all sickeners.
shroomersue
Dave, you are right on. The oak forest, the white stipe makes me think this is Lactarius chrysorheus.
