brendan
Hi, found this today, at first glance i though it was a plastic bag cause it was so big. I believe it’s some type of hericium? Also curious if people have thoughts on if it looks past edibility or not? Pretty ugly on top but the interior seems pretty fresh, no off smell or anything. Thanks! GCn15
Looks like it would still be edible to me. Might have a couple spots to trim off but not a lot.

Dave W
Was this found growing on wood? Looks like maybe a malformed Hericium fruit body. The spines appear to be bunched together in smallish clusters rather than the one big bunch you see on H. erinaceus. Also, the spines seem short for H. erinaceus. So, my guess is this is H. americanum. I wonder if maybe it started growing on a tree and then the tree was toppled over?
brendan
It was on a fallen trunk, doesn’t really appear to have fallen recently but I can’t say for sure. There was another near it with the wood more visible-
troutddicted
That branch has been sitting for sometime - the wood has greyed from the sun. Nice find!

Dave W
Okay, the mushroom fruited in a deep cavity ant got squeezed into an abnormal shape. Interesting find.
JOHNY
Looks like someone harvested it then you found it a few weeks later as it was trying to regenerate.
