Farallon
Hi all. I've been lurking around the forum for a couple of years hoping to learn what some mushrooms are that grow in my yard around my maple trees every fall. I've finally remembered to take some pictures to post. I understand that mushrooms can't be precisely identified in this manner, but I'd be happy if some of you could give educated guesses. As I said, the mushrooms appear almost overnight in late summer or early fall. The quickly grow and then rot, becoming infested with maggots. They then turn into a black slimy goo. Does anyone have a suggestion?
jmw
With little confidence I would say Laccaria sp. Maybe Laccaria laccata, however I would not be surprised to find out diffrenetly based on the little I have to go on. We have several members in PA so I am sure they will chime in with a solid opinion.
Dave W
This looks like a cluster of Armillaria tabescens, the Ringless Honey Mushroom. I believe I can see the small patches of hairs/scales concentrated near the centers of the caps. But I don't have a great deal of confidence in this ID suggestion. For instance, the stalks may actually have rings that can't be seen in the photos. Seeing additional features of these mushrooms may be helpful.
