Kevin Hoover
My wife found this today under conifer in Central Pennsylvania. Slightly sticky cap, white gills join the stem, stem somewhat scaled and remnants of a ring or veil. Bulb at base of stem. Taking a spore print now. I’m leaving tomorrow for several weeks and all my guide books are packed to
Dig
I believe I see veil remnants along the stipe, especially with the last picture. Possibly this recent thread is worth a look.
Kevin Hoover
The ones in that thread don’t appear to have a scaled stem or a bulbous stem base. Yes that is a veil.
vitog
The original photo almost certainly shows an Amanita.
Dave W
Kevin's mushroom is an example of Amanita muscaria var. guessowii. The patches generally seen on the cap appear to have been washed away by rainfall. Note the concentric deposits atop the basal bulb. A. muscaria var. guessowii is a common fall mushroom in NE NA. Cap color can vary from one fruiting to another.
