Hens?!?

Recommended Posts

Hi

im writing in from Connecticut.  Been mushrooming since I was a child, but strictly for hen of the woods and honeys.  My dad was from Italy and those were the only ones he picked.  As I grew up, I added a few different fungi to my edible list every few years.  Got about 20 species I would dine on at the moment.

There has ALWAYS been hens in my area every year, sometimes ridiculously abundant.  After a very good black trumpet season, I begin to go into hen season.  This year, since mid sept, I’ve found TWO.  A small hen and an absolutely gorgeous white hen ( I’ve only found 3 in my life).

if anyone is from Connecticut or bordering states, are you guys finding any this year?  It was a crazy wet spring and a beautiful but dry summer around here.   Is it possible the rain had THAT much effect on them?

i appreciate any info.  Thanks a lot!

Yes, very possible the rain had that much effect on them. Environmental conditions are key to producing a mushroom's fruit body. If the weather doesn't cooperate or the temperature, it can shut down a season even in the most prolific areas.
