True puffballs are edible when the interior is white looking like cream cheese. Three things to be aware of: 1. Buttons of gilled mushrooms --including poisonous Amanitas-- sometimes look like puffballs. Section lengthwise and examine the interior; 2. Some species of Scleroderma, when young, are white inside. The texture inside a Scleroderma fruit body is stiff/hard. Scleroderma should not be eaten; 3. Puffballs with interior darkening --usually greenish/yellowish at first-- should not be eaten.

"All white soft inside" suggests these are true puffballs in the edible stage. Do not consume uncooked.
