bhaas Posted October 21, 2019 Report Share Posted October 21, 2019 I believe I have found a purple spored puffball, Calvatia cyathiformis, and am looking for confirmation. Mushroom was found in an open grass field, no significant trees in the vicinity. Size is just slightly larger than a softball with a round shape from the top, but somewhat flattened shape from the side. Mushroom has very thick skin that reminds me of a pretzel bun in terms of color and cracking. Skin and flesh are easily separated. Flesh is pure white, soft, and smells very mild and slightly earthly. There was a slight bit of yellow staining towards the base when slicing through. I apologize for the pictures, had to take them in house, some with flash some without. Any help is appreciated, as well as any cooking techniques if appropriate. These two species are very similar; knowing the color of the mature spore mass is likely the only way to be certain which one you have. No difference in edible qualities.
