Jeremy G
These little guys are in the button stage; but cool looking. Waiting for them to open up to take a spore print in a couple days. Growing in a dead (very dead) conifer. Any thoughts if these are indeed Scaly Pholiota? -J
Dig
Looks like something else to me. *edit after further reading you could be correct. Mine look a bit different down here with more orange to the coloration and less pronounced spikes on the cap.
Dave W
Jeremy's mushrooms look like either Pholiota squarrosa or P. squarrosoides to me (very similar to one another). Here in eastern NA we get a white spored mushroom that's fairly similar, Leucopholiota decorosa. Dig's mushrooms look like a species of Pholiota other than the tow mentioned above (and also not L. decorosa). The caps are not quite scaly enough, and they appear to be growing on the ground near the base of a tree. Generally, I find squarrosa/squarrosoides directly on wood that's not buried.
