Joe T Posted October 1, 2019 Report Share Posted October 1, 2019 I was checking a patch of woods at work yesterday where I like to look for mushrooms. There's a huge old oak log where I've seen chickens before and sure enough, there had been a recent flush. But someone got to it before me and took almost all of them. Then I noticed a nearby log with a small piece chicken mushroom on it...and another, and another, and another. Someone is clearly trying to propagate chickens this way. I'll surely be keeping my eyes on these logs in the future to see if it works. In the meantime, does anyone know if this can be an effective method? Dig Posted October 1, 2019 Report Share Posted October 1, 2019 Drilling and inoculating an old log won’t work as the log already has established colonies of fungus typically. You are correct that logs that are decayed beyond the point of recognition are useless though.
