Chicken of the woods propagation

Recommended Posts

I was checking a patch of woods at work yesterday where I like to look for mushrooms. There's a huge old oak log where I've seen chickens before and sure enough,  there had been a recent flush. But someone got to it before me and took almost all of them. Then I noticed a nearby log with a small piece chicken mushroom on it...and another, and another, and another. Someone is clearly trying to propagate chickens this way. I'll surely be keeping my eyes on these logs in the future to see if it works. In the meantime, does anyone know if this can be an effective method?

Spawn plugs are sold for chickens.

edit

I find it unethical to do this on public land unless the tree is already dead/dying.

The logs were long dead and decayed to the point where the tree species was unrecognizable.

Drilling and inoculating an old log won’t work as the log already has established colonies of fungus typically.  These may have been old holes that were easy to grow out from.

I have successfully inoculated logs before. They need to be current season though. You are correct that logs that are decayed beyond the point of recognition are useless though. They have either been colonized by competing fungus or bacteria. or just don't have the necessary nutrients anymore.
