Howard
Checking out a neighborhood deciduous woods I haven't been in for a couple weeks, I stumbled across a bunch of balls - Giant Puffballs (Calvatia gigantea). Unfortunately, I got there a little late to the ball game and all that was left were a bunch of over-ripe, turning green, squishy, but not yet dusty puffers. There were eight of them there in an area the size of a football field. To my dismay, not one of them was edible, due to age, as these photos show the greenness of the ripe spores. I though my dog was helping me find puffballs, but all he wanted was the stick.
