MichaelGaryScott
Sorry, this is probably more of a fungi but I figured this would be a good place to find information. Anyone know what it is? Saw it while walking my dog. I’m in the Chicago area if location is important at all.
GCn15
Looks like a chicken of the woods to me. I have never seen one growing terrestrially but it is fairly common. Very good edible. Would need to see underside for positive ID..
Dig
There could be buried wood supporting the growth.
Dave W
Yes, probably growing from buried wood/roots. The combination of habitat and color of fruit body make this an interesting observation. Additional details would be nice to see.
MichaelGaryScott
Thank you! That looks spot on to a chicken in the woods. Took another picture today. But it looks like someone walked over it a bit. And even if it is edible, I think I will be passing on that. It’s just off the road on a Chicago street. Dog pee and a lot of other stuff floating around.
Dave W
Looks like an immature Laetiporus fruit body (Chicken Mushroom). If correct, it should expand quite a bit as it matures. The originally posted photo appeared to show areas that are brown in color.
