Mutant mushroom

Recommended Posts

I was foraging in a small deciduous woodlot in the Milwaukee suburbs and found this mutant mushroom that I think is a Russula amoenolens. It looks like it couldn't decide if it wanted to grow right side up or upside down. The inverted cap did not have a stem, of course, but the gills and the margin appeared to be growing normally, all be it upside down.

Looks like a type of Russula, but I have never seen anything like that before. Nice find!

Awesome. I love oddities like this. Once I saw a sappling growing in a downed rotting tree. This mushroom is much more rare and interesting though. :)

Thanks, all. It was almost not a find at all. My tired old eyes saw what looked, at first, like an acorn cap sitting on top of a mushroom. I almost ignored it, but it seemed too odd that an acorn would land like that, so I took another closer look. Glad I did, it is so unique.
