What kind of puffball?

If by "common puffball" you mean Lycoperdon perlatum, then I agree it's not this species. But, based upon the surface having spiny ornamentation, I think it is a species of Lycoperdon. Here's an idea  https://www.mycoquebec.org/bas.php?trie=L&l=l&nom=Lycoperdon umbrinum / Vesse-de-loup brun d'ombre&tag=Lycoperdon umbrinum&gro=12 . IDing Lycoperdon fruit bodies to species often requires use of a microscope.
