Ksuibom
Hello all. I apologize ahead of time for posting to the wrong forum earlier. I'll get the hang of it. Nevertheless - here goes. I found these (see photos) today growing on a Maple on the east end of Long Island. I suspect that they are oysters (perhaps Pleurotus pulmonarius because of the hot weather recently), but I have never collected them before and wanted a second opinion. Any opinions and info would be appreciated.
Luigi Daniele
Oysters. Smell them, they smell like oyster (some people say like balloons). Welcome aboard
Ksuibom
Thank you. I wouldn't have come up with "oyster" from the smell, but it is a light, sweet-ish smell that definitely isn't that super mushroomy smell of a maitake. Now I just have to get owners permission to harvest. Should I give them a few days to develop, or should I grab them now?

There are so many, and I think they're better young, that if it was me, I'd pick now. Also, if they are publicly visible, someone else might beat you to them
ladyflyfsh
I agree, I believe they are an oyster of some sort and i would pick them ASAP before they either dry up or get buggy.
Evan
Definitely oysters, and definitely pick them. Beetles love to get into oysters and eat them. Also, they soak up rain and deteriorate quickly.
theplanets
Yummy oysters! Wish there's some here right now.
Ksuibom
I got em' - about 3 lbs worth. Ate a pound, stored a pound, and bartered a pound. Great currency around here. Thanks for all the advice. I'll be back.
cborchids
Keep an eye on that tree also - my experience has been they'll come out whenever it's rained enough until they exhaust the nutrient they're getting from the wood - I've only ever seen them on dead wood. They can get little bugs fast also, and yes they're terrific on hamburgers, in a soup, stirfry....
