bobby b
Here's a nice clean fresh Amanita that seems like it belongs in the section Vaginatae. The fresh cap is naked and shiny. Partial veil is absent. The stem doesn't have a bulb. There's a well defined volva. Hundreds of Amanitas in the section Amanitae. Any ideas? Dave W
I love that second photo! My guess is this is one of the "amerifulva" types from section Vaginatae of genus Amanita. (A few different such taxa are distinguished by differing DNA data and subtle morphological differences.) If correct, the top rim of the volva should eventually stain brown. There are other possibilities. Section Vaginatae has turned out to be quite perplexing... Mushrooms that look different having matching DNA, as well as mushrooms that look the same but have DNA sequences that fail to match in key areas.
