Is this Agarikon

Recommended Posts

I found 4 on a downed tree. My friend picked this one before I could stop him. I live in Illinois so if this is Agarikon I am amazed.

According to what I have just read, "agaricon" refers to the species Laricifomes officinalis. This is a very large polypore that grows on conifer wood; in North America, mainly in the northwest part of the continent. This species used to be housed in genus Fomitopsis, until fairly recent DNA analysis showed that it belonged in a different genus.

What is seen in the photos above is more likely to be Fomes fomentarius, commonly called the "Hoof Fungus"  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fomes_fomentarius . This species grows on hardwood trees; commonly on beech or birch. Recent analysis suggests the NA strain of this fungus may be a slightly different species than F. fomentarius. The name Fomes excavatus" has been proposed.
