MDmushbrain
I’m from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and was walking in our forests just after the winter thaw. Found that the tree line on the mud trail had what at first looked to be moss but on closer inspection was small patches of fungal growth. Any help on what these are or where to look for identification would be greatly appreciated!
Dave W
This is a lichen, a species of Dibaeis. Probably D. baeomyces https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dibaeis_baeomyces .
MDmushbrain
That’s totally it! Thanks so much for your help in identification. Do you have any sources where I could learn an approach to ID’ing stuff? cheers!
Dave W
Two sources for study of lichens in NA are "Lichens of North America" by Brodo et al, and "Macrolichens of New England" by Hinds.
