Dave W
This is a species of Amanita. In order to learn to ID Amanita mushrooms to species, it is necessary to learn to interpret various traits, including the ones associated with the base of the stalk. To this end, one should extract the entire mushroom and examine/photograph from different angles. Then, after years of collecting and studying traits, one may become proficient in identifying these type mushrooms to species. Using several field guides and/or other identification sources is recommended. Amanita is a tricky genus. In CA there are deadly poisonous types like A. phalloides and A. ocreata that may be confused with edible types like A. calyptroderma (formerly A. calyptrara) and A. velosa. Looks like Boonville is over 2 hours away from San Francisco. The Bay Area Mycological Society is a well-known mushroom club with lots of knowledgeable members. Here's a website nice website on CA mushrooms http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species_index.html#1_2 .
