ZingaraJoe
Never saw any of these before, but just now [late October 2018 ] there are several in a localized area under shade of trees. We have had a good bit of rain lately. Curious as to what these might be and of course are they good to eat and if so how best prepared? Location Puerto Plata, Dom. Rep. MushroomDan
Looks like a whiffle ball that was spray painted hot pink, ran over by a car and then stuck into the soil.
vitog
That looks like Clathus ruber, a stinkhorn mushroom. I'm not familiar enough with them to know if there are other similar stinkhorns.
Dave W
According to Mushroom Expert, there are two similar species of Clathrus that look like the one seen in this dicsussion. C. crispus has radial lines along the openings of the holes, and C. ruber lacks the radial lines. Otherwise, the two species are quite similar.
