Ischnoderma resinosum

I was looking for maitake, but only found I. resinosum (abbreviated correctly?).  This was an area that is flooded one two feet deep for six months every year.  It was amazing, ever red oak was covered with them at the base.  Most were tender as in the first photo and I was unaware that they were edible.  The book says 'tastes like chicken of the woods' which I'm not a fan of, so I didn't miss out by not keeping any.  The old ones appear to have a less-indented rim and the new 'buds' look like pop corn.

P.S. Sorry, I know this is only of mild curiosity.  The main reason was to ask about the habitat.  Will maitake survive in a flooded zone as these did?  I was surprised I didn't find any despite all the decaying trees.
