Old man?

Recommended Posts

Is this an Old man? Found in NJ pine barrens. Covered  with sand underneath. There are still plenty of conventionally looking old man around. This one has pine cone looking structure on the top.

The sandy terrain of the Pine Barrens can cause a mushroom to not develop normally, especially if the mushroom is partially buried in the sand. So maybe this is just an atypical example of S. stobilaceus (aka. S. floccopus). But the Pine Barrens is known to get species of mushrooms that are not expected at the same latitude. So this could be a southern species of Strobilomyces that I'm not very familiar with. But it does look like a Strobilomyces, albeit old and weathered, possibly moldy.
