4rum
Found beautiful fresh 'chickens' today. Also found this striking white fungi growing on the side of a dead white ash. Tree hasn't been dead long, it has fallen prey to the Emerald Ash Borer that has invaded this region.
ladyflyfsh
looks like Pleurotus ostreatus or oyster mushrooms.
4rum
Thanks, It's definitely gilled. There were a couple more clumps on the same tree. These were striking, chalky white, very fresh and just beautiful!
DufferinShroomer
They certainly do look like an oyster. Give them a sniff, fresh oysters will have a sort of licorice/anise aroma to them. And remember where the tree is because once the oysters get established they will fruit on the same tree for several years.
4rum
DufferinShroomer; Wow! Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely go sniff 'em. The tree is almost in sight of the house so I'll do that today while they're still pretty fresh. Is the oyster edible? Sorry to be so ignorant, but I just have never studied mushrooms. ladyflyfsh
Yes, Oysters are edible and delicious. Sam, I'd recommend you pick up a book called Mushrooms of West Virginia and the Central Appalachians by William Roody. It's perfect for where you live! I have it and don't even live there.
