elmunc
I came across these this morning in a mixed deciduous/coniferous forest in central North Carolina. They are in clusters of 4 or 5; don't seem to share a base unless it's underground. They're emerging horizontally from a mossy area at the base of a tree in a mostly shaded area. (horizontally because there's a sharp incline between the base of the tree and the level of the path I was on). No particular smell I could detect. Perhaps 2-3 inches long. Any ideas? I've never encountered something that looks like this before.
The Mushroom Whisperer
Appears to be Calostoma sp. I'm not very familiar with them, but possibly C. lutescens.
Dave W
Actually, if these were found in eastern NA then I'd like your species proposal, Whisperer. The two main Calostoma species out this way are cinnabarinum and lutescens. The pale ones seen here look more like lutescens to me. Not sure if this applies out West, though. The Mushroom Whisperer
Well, I'm not gonna lie, I've always considered North Carolina eastern NA...😀 But I am from Washington state. Everything else is east to me.
Dave W
Duh! I was mistakenly looking at your info, Whisperer. Yeah, NC... probably C. lutescens.
