An odd little bunch

I came across these this morning in a mixed deciduous/coniferous forest in central North Carolina.  They are in clusters of 4 or 5; don't seem to share a base unless it's underground.  They're emerging horizontally from a mossy area at the base of a tree in a mostly shaded area.  (horizontally because there's a sharp incline between the base of the tree and the level of the path I was on).  No particular smell I could detect.  Perhaps 2-3 inches long.  Any ideas?  I've never encountered something that looks like this before.

Actually, if these were found in eastern NA then I'd like your species proposal, Whisperer. The two main Calostoma species out this way are cinnabarinum and lutescens. The pale ones seen here look more like lutescens to me. Not sure if this applies out West, though.
