Railo
Rookie forager here.Found these while walking in a decidous forest near Lake Erie. what tree species they're growing on? My guess from picture searching is black cherry but there are no leaves or twigs left on the tree, just the bark...also no trees with similar bark around. Anyone know if they're huroniensis or growing on a pine?
BastedBrew
Definitely chickens, if the first pic is the underside, I’d lean towards l. Sulphureus based on the colorful yellow “tips” on the ends in the 2nd photo. Looks like cherry bark to me, but I’m not familiar with the area or l. Huroniensis, so I’d wait for more opinions
djg
I'm in IL and cut my own firewood. So I know a little about trees. Definitely looks like Black Cherry to me.

CamilleR
Interesting, I've only found them on oaks.
vitog
I find the western version of Chicken of the Woods on cherry trees, even though it's supposed to only be on conifers, as indicated by its Latin name: L. conifericola.
