mastodonald@hotmail.com
Hi, I'm kind of new to mushroom hunting and need some help, I found some chicken of the woods last week and I'm very sure what they are, and now I have found what I think are porcini mushrooms, any help would be much appreciated. Tasso
Not a porcini. I think it's Tylopilus plumbeoviolaceus and it is very bitter. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/tylopilus_plumbeoviolaceus.html
svs
I agree with Tasso about top one. Looks like bitter Tylopilus. You can taste small piece to be sure. Bottom one, may be Xanthoconium. If not bitter, may be OK to eat. Also check if there is no staining when cut.
Dave W
That top pic is a beautiful photo of Tylopilus plumbeoviolaceus (like Tasso said). Not edible, but photogenic!
