The Mushroom Whisperer Posted July 21, 2018 Report Share Posted July 21, 2018 Compare these two observations: the first is for Xerocomellus zelleri https://mushroomobserver.org/257774?q=SS6x The second is for X. atropurpureus https://mushroomobserver.org/256390?q=SS6x Your mushroom appears to have the same stature, surface texture, and coloration as X. atropurpureus, which has been in the group of mushrooms known as the Zellers bolete. Dave W Posted July 21, 2018 Report Share Posted July 21, 2018 I believe X. atropurpureus is a species recently split off of X. zelleri. What at least some field guides picture as X. zelleri is probably actually X. atropurpureus.
