Zellers?

Recommended Posts

Compare these two observations:  the first is for Xerocomellus zelleri  https://mushroomobserver.org/257774?q=SS6x

The second is for X. atropurpureus  https://mushroomobserver.org/256390?q=SS6x

Your mushroom appears to have the same stature, surface texture, and coloration as X. atropurpureus, which has been in the group of mushrooms known as the Zellers bolete.

I believe X. atropurpureus is a species recently split off of X. zelleri. What at least some field guides picture as X. zelleri is probably actually X. atropurpureus. But, since I have never found either species of west coast bolete, I don't really know how to distinguish one from the other.
