bobby b
Brown cap with non staining creamy white flesh. Light brown long tubes that stained darker. Tubes easily removed from cap and recessed around stem. Pronounced reticulation on thin upper stem which fades toward the thicker bottom. Didn't give up too many spores but looked somewhere between orange and pink. Taste wasn't mild, somewhere between bitter and acrid? I would have thought that this was an easy identification using the Bolete filter and mushroomexpert but no success.
The Mushroom Whisperer
Looks like a Tylopilus, possibly T. felleus.
Dave W
Almost certainly a species of Tylopilus. I agree that T. felleus looks like a good possibility. This species is usually very bitter, although the intensity varies somewhat. T. felleus sometimes grows on wood.
bobby b
Thanks, not very good at describing taste or smells but it stuck with me for quite a while.
Dave W
Some people lack the ability to taste bitter, males only I am told. I would imagine this trait exists on a sliding scale, with some detecting bitter more intensely than others.
