Scaly Inky Cap?

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

Found these a week or so ago in south-central Pa. The closest I can come with is Coprinopsis variegata but what I’ve read about it is it grows on dead wood or wood chips. The nearest tree was probably 15 yards away & there wasn’t any wood chips nearby either. Any ideas?

thanks

Maybe Coprinopsis atramentaria var. squamosa, which appears to be a 'scaly cap' var. of the Alcohol inky?

Interesting suggestion, Matt. I had not been aware of the scaly-cap variety of C. atramentaria. Mushroom Expert mentions it.

I would not eliminate C. variegata because there's no visible wood. They could be growing from buried wood. However, the scales look a bit small for C. variegata. Coprinopsis romagnesiana is another possibility to consider.
