Dave W
If the tree is a hemlock or some other conifer, then the mushroom is Ganoderma tsugae. If the tree is a hardwood --oak, maple-- then the mushroom is probably Ganoderma curtisii. (The species name lucidum is also used for the hardwood type, but this species does not occur in NA.) These are all "Varnished Ganoderma" polypores, also called Reishi. This type mushroom is believed to contain health beneficial substances, and some people use them to prepare a tincture or tea.
