Dave W
I think this is Xanthoconium affine. Spore print will help here. X. affine has a yellowish-brown print. Tylopilus species have pinkish-brown prints.
diana
Thanks, will remember to do spore prints next time. Also, I did purchase a microscope and will try looking at spores. Any hints on how to do this properly?
Dave W
Mount spores from a spore drop collected directly onto a microscope slide using 4% KOH solution. View at 400x. If you can't get a spore drop then smash mount a tiny piece of gill/tube.
diana
Cool. I'll give it a try when things are not so plentiful. Where would I find KOH?
Dave W
I have a fairly large bottle of KOH that I purchased online about 5 years ago. Probably time to replace it. One problem is that things like KOH are usually sold in large quantity. Is there a college/university near you? You may be able to convince someone in Bio or Chem Dept to sell you a small amount. If it's strong --10% or more-- you may dilute with distilled water. KOH is a caustic substance, so it may be that it has become more difficult to obtain since I last bought some.
