WilliamEpperson
I found these on a tree back in October of last year. I was wondering if anyone has any idea of what species it might be. I tried identifying it with my field guide but didn't have any luck. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Dave W
The first thought that comes to my mind is these are mature fruit bodies of Ischnoderma resinosum http://www.mushroomexpert.com/ischnoderma_resinosum.html . But one thing that bothers me about this ID proposal is the fairly dark greenish color of the pore surfaces (undersides). Grows on hardwood, but a variety called I. benzonius grows on conifer wood. Another species I considered is Phaeolus schweinitzii. The greenish pore surfaces suggest this possibility. Usually P. schweinitzii grown on or near the ground from tree roots. But I have seen this species growing several feet up the trunk of a tree. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/phaeolus_schweinitzii.html Always on/near conifer (wood). But, I think this is a species of Inonotus... maybe I. hispidus or I. quercustris http://www.mushroomexpert.com/inonotus_quercustris.html The hairy caps and color of the pore surfaces fits. I don't see these types very often.
