BotanyBoy
Here are a couple I've seen here. The first I'm sure is Clathrus archeri, an naturalized exotic here. The second I'm no so sure about, but maybe Pseudocolus fusiformis? Interesting, yet disgusting looking things!

Dave W
I think they are each species of Clathrus, but maybe not the same species. Red one looks like C. archeri. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/clathrus_archeri.html Yellow one looks like something close to C columnatus. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/clathrus_columnatus.html
BotanyBoy
Thanks for the input Dave. I definitely think the first is C. archeri since that species is known to have escaped in Japan. The second one does indeed look a lot like C. columnatus, but that species is not recorded from Japan that I know. In a search I came across another species of Pseudocolus, P. schellenbergiae, which seems to fit the bill. Here's a link to a photo on a Japanese website: https://www.hokto-kinoko.co.jp/kinokolabo/album/790/ I've always found these mushrooms to be fascinating, but a bit grotesque too. Dave W
Interesting. Thanks. Pseudocolus is a genus I had not known about. These look similar to Clathrus, and a few species appear to have been shuffled back and forth between Clathrus and Pseudocolus. http://www.speciesfungorum.org/Names/names.asp?strGenus=Pseudocolus
